The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC) has introduced the 13 shortlisted works for the inaugural version of its Sard Al Thahab Award, which embrace submissions from varied international locations, together with the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Morocco.
The Award honours storytellers and narrators of biography, literature, and folks narratives domestically, regionally, and globally. Within the Quick Story for Unpublished Tales class, 4 works made the shortlist: ‘Zilzal’ (Earthquake) by Moroccan creator Abdelrahim Selili; ‘Masr, Ibn Aarous: Almataha w Alkhalas’ (Egypt, Ibn Aarous’: The Maze and the Salvation) by Mahmoud Saeed Mohamed from Egypt; ‘Ma Bayn Shiqqay Raha’ (Between Two Millstones) by Egyptian creator Rania Ahmed Helal Kamel; and ‘Marthiyat al-’Itr wal-Bahr’ (Elegy of Perfume and the Sea) by Huda Al Shamashi from Morocco.
Three works are competing within the Quick Story for Revealed Tales class: ‘Qamees Takweeh Emar’atan’ (A Shirt Ironed by Two Ladies) by Egyptian creator Ahmed Aldariny, printed in 2019; ‘Indama Kanat al-Ard Murabaa’ (When the Earth Was Sq.) by Emirati author Lulwah Al Mansouri, printed in 2020; and ‘Thawr Ha’ij’ (Raging Bull) by Hisham Shaaban from Egypt, printed in 2023.
Within the In style Narratives class, the shortlist additionally options three works: ‘Sawalif Skeek’ (Skaik Talks( by the Emirati creator Maisoon Youssef Al Ansari, printed in 2021; ‘Banat Waq Waq wa hikayat’ ukhraa’ (The Women of Waq Waq and Different Tales) story assortment by Dr. Abdulaziz Al Musallam from the UAE, printed in 2023; and ‘Rhalat Albatal fi Hikayat Al Aaqili wal-AlYaziya’ (The Hero’s Journey within the Story of Al-Aqeeli and Al-Yazia) from the Emirati heritage by Ayedi Ali Juma from Egypt, printed in 2023.
