The Nagpur bench of the Bombay Excessive Court docket has stated there was no restriction on placing up signboards for municipal councils in any language together with the state’s official language Marathi.
A division bench of Justices Avinash Gharote and M S Jawalkar on April 10 dismissed a petition in search of the elimination of a signboard of the Patur Municipal Council displaying the civic physique’s title in Urdu together with Marathi.

The petition filed by one Varsha Bagde sought the court docket’s route to the chairman of the Akola District Marathi Language Committee to take rapid motion towards using Urdu on the signboard of the Patur Municipal Council.
Bagde cited that any language aside from Marathi on the signboards of civic authorities was prohibited underneath the Maharashtra Native Authorities (Official Languages) Act, 2022.
The provisions of the Act would imply that solely Marathi can be the official language and no different language is permitted, she stated.
The court docket in its order stated the provisions of the Act solely be certain that the enterprise and affairs of the council are carried out in Marathi, together with the script.
