Trevor Phillips clashed with Oliver Dowden after telling him voters now not know what the Tory Social gathering stands for.
The Sky Information presenter requested the deputy prime minister “who’re you” following contemporary controversy over feedback by high-profile Conservatives.
Former prime minister Liz Truss was criticised for showing alongside Steve Bannon at a right-wing convention in America, whereas Suella Braverman was condemned for claiming that “Islamists” now run the nation.
And Lee Anderson, the previous Tory deputy chairman, was stripped of the Tory whip after he refused to apologise for feedback about Sadiq Khan.
The controversies come towards a backdrop of final Wednesday night time’s chaotic vote on Gaza within the Commons, when Speaker Lindsay Hoyle controversially allowed a Labour modification amid fears of a backlash towards MPs by pro-Palestine campaigners.
On Sky Information this morning, Phillips advised Dowden: “Proper now we don’t fairly know what Tory Social gathering we’re being requested to vote for.
“Is it the old fashioned, genteel ‘one nation’ Conservative Social gathering that I believe most individuals affiliate with Oliver Dowden?
“Or is it this contemporary, brash take no prisoners Conservatism of Lee Anderson, Liz Truss and Suella Braverman? Who’re you?”
However Dowden mentioned there was no contradiction between the 2 positions.
He mentioned: “What I’ve been attempting to get throughout to you in my solutions, and perhaps I’ve not been doing it very effectively, is to say that I don’t assume it’s incompatible being a one nation Conservative as I’m and lots of others have been.
“However calling out these threats and intimidation truly, as a one nation Conservative who believes in our nation and defending the values of this nation, one of the vital treasured values in free speech, free expression and our parliamentary democracy.
“And now we have seen up to now week threats to that parliamentary democracy.”
